Fundraising Success
Fundraising success
We are extremely grateful to some recent grants: £1,000 from Persimmon Community Champions, £500 from Next plc, £1,000 from Annie Tranmer Charitable Trust and £500 from the Billericay Mayflower Rotary Club. Year 8 at the Perse School raised over £2,000 from an inclusive kilometre and were exceptionally imaginative in the way they did it.
Would you be willing to raise funds for us? Do you fancy a bike ride, an ultra-marathon, or baking cakes or selling pancakes? Please do get in touch. We can help find the events, help with the technology and promote your efforts to your friends and the public. For example, we have three spaces available for next year’s London 100 mile classic cycle ride finishing in the Mall. We would LOVE to hear from you.
Festival of Inclusive Tennis 2019 a huge success!
Over 75 people of all ages and abilities enjoyed the Third Cambridge Festival of Inclusive Tennis at the University Sports Centre on Saturday, 20 July. It was truly inclusive with absolute beginners joining experienced players in the fun. It was a staggering success.
Young Charlie captured the fun of the day:
“This has been the best day ever! Can you put it on again in the summer holidays?”
Not every day Charlie, but there are plenty of opportunities in the city!
Cambridge Tennis Academy’s Rob Ellis, chief coach at the event, explained that inclusive tennis is available to all in the City:
“A number of clubs – mine based at Chesterton Sports Centre, and Cambridge Lawn Tennis Club in Wilberforce Road being just two examples – run inclusive sessions every week and will accommodate all needs whether players have a disability or are older or not. Just contact us via our website to find out more.”
Tim Arthur, chair of Cambridgeshire LTA, attended and was thrilled with the result of the grant they gave to enable the event to be held:
“To see so many youngsters, oldsters, and players from the disabled community, coming together to experience the fun of tennis was magnificent. Thanks to CADMuS, the Sports Centre and to Power2Inspire for making this happen.”

John Willis, a law graduate from Trinity Hall, born without fully formed arms and legs, set up Power2Inspire in 2013 to encourage more inclusion through sport. As a youngster he was left on the sidelines when it came to sport, so he is determined that “No one be left on the bench!” regardless of age, gender, race, faith or disability. He pointed to two older residents of the city who came along as they hadn’t played in years: “The Festival gave them the opportunity to experiment, sure in the knowledge they wouldn’t make a fool of themselves, and I hope it rekindled their love for tennis and they too will now join a club and not be left on the bench!”
John explains more about the event in the video here:

Super Sensory 1K 2019
On Bank Holiday Monday, 6th May 2019, we hosted our second fabulous Super Sensory 1K – 1 ,000m loop of Histon Recreation Ground. It was a truly inclusive event, as part of the Histon and Impington Running Festival. People travelled the distance walking, wheeling, running, hopping, and even three-legged. It was so much fun!

There were also five sensory stations along the route so everyone got chance to celebrate smell, touch, sight, sound and taste. There was allsorts to try from farmyard smells to tasting sweet strawberries. Each station was sponsored and put together by a local business so we are incredibly grateful to our friends at the following businesses for making the SS1K so wonderfully interactive

If you want to get an ever better sense of what the event was about you can watch the short video here to see some wonderful images of the day. If you would like to put on a Super Sensory 1K in your local town do get in touch, we’d love to help you.
The whole event was supported by our main sponsor Irwin Mitchell to whom we are very grateful, especially for our fantastic t-shirts!!

Live on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire

Talk at Sancton Wood School
Today John gave a talk to pupils at the wonderful Sancton Wood School in Cambridge. Here is their write-up of the event:

This week at Sancton Wood we had a remarkable visitor come to talk to us about overcoming barriers.
John Willis from Power2inspire shared his experiences of how he has had to overcome many challenging obstacles in his life due to being born without limbs.

We found it very humbling to see how much John has achieved in his life despite not even having any hands to write with.
John has learnt to write, been to university, worked as a lawyer, mastered a wide variety of sports and even drives a car.

In short John has not allowed himself to be limited to anything despite the physical restraints of his body.
John is married and has 2 wonderful able bodied daughters who he is very proud of.
Many of us were amazed to see his beautiful drawings that took hours of patience and skill.

Moreover we were particularly impressed by his courage to dive off a high board in a swimming pool with no arms to break his fall, just his head! What an inspiration to us all.
John’s message to us was: Hard work and practise makes progress!
Huge thank you to Sancton Wood School for inviting John in to meet you all. It was a great day.
If you would like John to come in to your school or workplace and give a talk please do Contact Us here and we would love to arrange something soon
